National Bird Week 2016 will take place in Australia from Monday 17 October to Sunday 23 October.
National Bird Week is organised and promoted by BirdLife Australia (www.birdlife.org.au) with the aim of encouraging Australians to participate in bird conservation efforts. Australians have been celebrating National Bird Week for over 100 years.
An initiative of National Bird Week is the Aussie Backyard Bird Count. This nationwide event helps to increase knowledge of birdlife trends across Australia. With over 900 species of birds in Australia, getting involved in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is easy - all you need is 20 minutes, an outdoor space and your eyesight.
In 2015 over 42,000 Australians participated in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, with over one million birds counted. In 2015, the top ten birds Australia wide were:
